It's the beginning of the term, and my thoughts are turning to getting folks motivated to escape this blog. I'll probably email everyone since I'm not convinced folks are reading this. But what I'd like to know is what your game plan is for getting significant work done this semester.
I know that Wilma and Iris are getting very close. Wilma's doing really good work. I've also heard that Kent and Derek have a plan. I know that Scott is plugging away (and enjoying his adorable son Henry). I know Bridget is working despite teaching more classes than any 4 teachers put together! Who and what am I leaving out?
I'm sending you all fond thoughts and energy.

I'm making some progress; however, I am not as far along as I wanted to be at this point. Because Monday is an observed holiday for SOSU, I'm taking a personal day on Tuesday so that I'll have those four days together to wrap up the chapter I'm working on. (I'll miss only one class; that isn't too unprofessional, is it?) My goal is to be finished with the body chapters by Sept. 10th (of this year). It seems impossible, but if I don't set goals and enforce time limits, I'll never get finished.

Here's the deal: When you're finishing your dissertation, everything else goes on the back burner--even teaching. You have all established your reputations as good teachers. No one is going to call you on the carpet for assigning one less paper or handing back fast comments rather than your usual thorough ones. You have to get done, so cut corners where you can. Your students' lives will not be harmed by this. Your department's live (such as it is) will continue as well. Make that PhD happen.
